May is National Mobility Awareness Month

Tuesday, May 1st, 2012

Did you know more than 18 million people in the United States and Canada have mobility issues? Six million of those people are veterans. This May, the National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association (NMEDA) is sponsoring the first-ever National Mobility Awareness Month to spread awareness for people with disabilities and the mobility solutions available.

According to the Harris Poll, sponsored by the National Organization on Disability (NOD), just under one third of people with disabilities reported that inadequate transportation was a problem.  Of those individuals, more than half said it was a major problem. The theme of the inaugural awareness month, Life Moving Forward, represents a desire to spread awareness and knowledge about mobility issues. The goal of National Mobility Awareness Months is to teach seniors, veterans and people with disabilities to live an active and mobile lifestyle through the use of wheelchair accessible vehicles and mobility equipment.

NMEDA selected a spokesperson for the month that has never let mobility issues slow him down. Mike Savicki, a freelance sports journalist, disability advocate and small business entrepreneur serves as the spokesperson for National Mobility Awareness Month. Savicki is a 69-time gold medalist in the National Veterans Wheelchair Games. He is the only person to ever finish the Boston Marathon on both foot and a wheelchair.

How can you get involved?

As part of the National Mobility Awareness month, NMEDA is giving away three customized wheel chair vans to three local heroes that have overcome or are dealing with mobility issues. To nominate a local hero, submit a video or written story of about they have overcome or are dealing with mobility issues by May 13, 2012. Vote for your favorite local hero by May 13.

OH-4 and Mobility

OH-4 believes that mobility awareness is important. OH-4 Industries created the Nearly Universal Cup Holder as a convenient solution for people with disabilities. This cup holder easily attaches to the armrests of wheelchairs and scooters with Velcro brand fasteners.

How to Choose a Single Cup Coffee Maker

Saturday, July 17th, 2010

There are quite a few varieties of coffee makers around in the market. When you are about to choose a single cup coffee maker either in your office or for the mug in your drink holder you might need to understand the types of pots that you can choose from the market shelves. “One cup” coffee makers are invariably coffee makers that have automatic flavoring too. These automatic flavored machines can again be categorized into two types. One is the java single serve system and the other is the java drip machine that gives one cup of coffee in the fixed time. The java systems are again differentiated on the basis of their pots.

You might need to ask yourself quite a few questions before you zero in on the right coffee maker. The first question to be asked is whether the filter that your one cup coffee maker has is a paper filter or a permanent filter. Next, you need to know the size of the cup, which it uses. Although, it is a single cup coffee maker it could be a regular cup of a large sized mug. You need to consider a few things about the configuration.

For example, you might need to find if the height can be adjusted for a larger mug or a regular mug accordingly. One of the most important things about the flavored automatic coffee maker is how automatic it actually is. In other words, you need to find out if the coffee maker can instantly make coffee as soon as you just set the timer without your worrying about intervening in the middle. Similarly, if it allows for a particular cup size (much like out universal cup holder), the coffee powder it uses and the time required should be adjusted accordingly. It doesn’t make much sense if you have to manually intervene every time. You may also need to find if the coffee maker comes with an attached espresso mug for travel. This is a very handy thing that you could carry around and have your own cup of coffee whenever you need, be it at airports on long journeys in a train. Effective coffee makers need to be small so they fit into your bag and automatic to a reasonable extent. Lastly you might need to consider the price of the coffee maker as you don’t want to be spending a lot on something that makes just one coffee.
