How do coffee pod machines work?

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

Ahhh, a soothing cup of coffee in the morning, and some easy brews to make and toss in your drink holder:

Coffee pod machines, like the Nespresso or the Phillips Senseo, promise to deliver a great cup of coffee with no hassle. They’re otherwise known as “single-serve” coffee machines, because they only deliver a single serving of coffee at a time – sounds like a great idea.

So what do you do?

Making coffee is simplicity itself. You refill the resevoir on the back of the machine with water, if it’s not full already. Then you select the type of coffee you want from your selection of “pods” – much like tea bags for coffee, they’re little containers with just enough ground coffee (and, some people whisper, also some instant coffee) for a single cup. Insert them into the machine (one or two depending on whether you want a cup or a mugto go in your cup holder), put your recepticle of choice in the bottom, press the button, and bam – instant coffee that isn’t, in fact, instant coffee.

Workplaces seem to particularly like this type of food and beverage.

How does it work?

At the back of the machine is a narrow series of tubes, which can be heated with a large heating element. The tubes are narrow enough and the flow carefully enough controlled that the element can actually heat the water up to 88 degrees Centigrade (190F approximately), the perfect temperature for coffee making, whilst the water flows.

Once the water hits the top of the machine, it is then forced down and through the coffee pod, through a narrow needle designed to increase the pressure of the water. The water spreads out through the coffee, extracting the coffee flavours, before being forced through another narrow nozzle and out into your cup.

Whilst some people will say these machines produce espresso, with the exception of the Nespresso, the drink they produce and the brewing mechanism is actually much more similar to something like a Moka Pot.

Does it taste good?

For that, we’ll turn over to the cookery experts, who have written a great guide to coffee pods, and whether they’re right for you. Enjoy!

Senseo Coffee Pods Make Your Mornings a Lot Easier

Information below, because having the right cup of joe in your coffee cup holder is important:

Your alarm goes off. It’s time for work. You reluctantly get out of bed, brush your teeth, hit the shower, and get dressed. All this time there is only on though going through your head: “Coffee!”

A cup of coffee is a vital part of most adults morning ritual. It gives them the kick in the pants that they need to get going. However, early in the morning it’s such a hassle to set a fresh pot. If only there was an easier way for you to get that delicious cup of smouldering blackness. Enter senseo coffee pods.

Senseo coffee pods have revolutionized making coffee. Never before was it this easy and quick to brew a cup of coffee for the mug in your drink holder. They originated in Europe, where Dutch companies Douwe Egberts and Philips collaborated to design these helpful little pouches. These companies decided that it must be possible to make the coffee making process more user friendly and quicker.

Their collaboration worked out like a charm. Senseo coffee pods have made it possible to brew a cup of coffee in a matter of seconds. All that is needed is a coffee pod, a coffee pod machine and water.

Now coffee making is as easy as making tea. You simply put the pod and the water in the machine, and press a button. The water will be heated in a matter of seconds, and the machine will be ready to pour you a cup.

It didn’t take long for other flavors of coffee pods to appear. Now you can choose from dark roast, medium roast, vanilla, decaf, cappuccino, or espresso coffee pods. And those are only some of the options you have. Whatever you like, you can count on the fact that there will be a pod available that can give you your favourite type of coffee.

The only downside to this new invention that for now it can only brew two cups at a time. Still, it’s much faster than a regular coffee maker. Besides, you can probably count on the wonderful teams that work at Douwe Egberts and Philips to create a machine in the future that tackles this issue.

So if you haven’t yet installed a coffee pod machine at your house, make sure to get one as soon as possible. I can promise you that will be no regret.
