How do coffee pod machines work?

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

Ahhh, a soothing cup of coffee in the morning, and some easy brews to make and toss in your drink holder:

Coffee pod machines, like the Nespresso or the Phillips Senseo, promise to deliver a great cup of coffee with no hassle. They’re otherwise known as “single-serve” coffee machines, because they only deliver a single serving of coffee at a time – sounds like a great idea.

So what do you do?

Making coffee is simplicity itself. You refill the resevoir on the back of the machine with water, if it’s not full already. Then you select the type of coffee you want from your selection of “pods” – much like tea bags for coffee, they’re little containers with just enough ground coffee (and, some people whisper, also some instant coffee) for a single cup. Insert them into the machine (one or two depending on whether you want a cup or a mugto go in your cup holder), put your recepticle of choice in the bottom, press the button, and bam – instant coffee that isn’t, in fact, instant coffee.

Workplaces seem to particularly like this type of food and beverage.

How does it work?

At the back of the machine is a narrow series of tubes, which can be heated with a large heating element. The tubes are narrow enough and the flow carefully enough controlled that the element can actually heat the water up to 88 degrees Centigrade (190F approximately), the perfect temperature for coffee making, whilst the water flows.

Once the water hits the top of the machine, it is then forced down and through the coffee pod, through a narrow needle designed to increase the pressure of the water. The water spreads out through the coffee, extracting the coffee flavours, before being forced through another narrow nozzle and out into your cup.

Whilst some people will say these machines produce espresso, with the exception of the Nespresso, the drink they produce and the brewing mechanism is actually much more similar to something like a Moka Pot.

Does it taste good?

For that, we’ll turn over to the cookery experts, who have written a great guide to coffee pods, and whether they’re right for you. Enjoy!

The Top 3 Espresso Machines

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

I know we’ve been a “buzz” lately with all the cup holder and coffee talk, but here’s more great info:

Espresso has grown in popularity over the last few years.  The growth has been so large that many people are now making their own espresso.  Modern technology has provided some great machines that can produce commercial style quality right in your own home.  Listed below are the top three machines in order.

  1. Delonghi Magnifica – This wonderful machine is truly automatic.  There is a bean grinder located inside the machine.  Pick out a favorite coffee bean, pour it in and watch it go to work. The beans are ground according to the amount needed for serving.  Unused beans are saved for later use. No more measuring the right number of beans.  The DeLonghi Espresso Makeralso has warmers for the cup and espresso.  This ensures optimal temperature for your drinking pleasure.  Clean up is a breeze since the entire brewing mechanism is removable.  Take it out, rinse it off and put it back in place.  Easy as pie. The automatic timer is a real joy.  Pour in the beans, fill the reservoir with water and set the  timer and espresso will be waiting for you when you get out of bed.  With the water and bean capacity, this machine can hold enough to make espresso for a couple of days.
  2. Rancilio Silvia – This machine is usually advertised as an entry level espresso maker.  It has a inexpensive acquisition cost and it makes good espresso.  It does take a long time for it to generate a drink, upwards of 45 minutes.  One of the more favorite qualities of this machine is its look.  People enjoy having a commercial grade espresso machine in their home that can also add to the style of the kitchen.
  3. Gaggia Classic – This model is the best selling product from the Gaggia brand.  Its fans claim that it makes a terrific tasting espresso in the comfort of their own kitchen.  It is slightly different from the first two models mentioned above because this one is dubbed a semi automatic machine.  In order to make an espresso the user must first determine the proper dose of coffee beans.  The beans must then be tamped according to specifications.  Finally, the brewing must be monitored to make sure it reaches the right temperature and stays at that temperature long enough to make the drink.

Purchasing a home espresso machine has many practical aspects.  It can save time and money by cutting down on trips to the local coffee shop for your favorite food and beverage.  It also can be a great way to end an evening with friends by sharing a nice cup of espresso in or out of a coffee drink holder.  And it can add real flavor to the morning to make sure the day starts out right.

Tassimo T Discs And Their Benefits

Monday, August 9th, 2010

The wife and I enjoy our Tassimo, as it makes the perfect single cup of coffee or tea for our cup holder:

The Tassimo Home Brewing System is among the hottest items in the coffee market today.  And why not?  It enables you to brew a single cup of coffee in under a minute, and to get it just right every single time.  But with hundreds of  Tassimo T Discs to choose from, it can sometimes be a confusing task to select the ones that are best for you.  But it need not be.  There is basically a Tassimo coffee disc available for just about every well known brand and flavor of coffee.  So if your particular favorite is available in the Tassimo system, there really isn’t a need to look any further.  Your favorite coffee prepared with the Tassimo machine should taste just as good, if not better, than when prepared with a traditional coffee maker.

A major advantage of the Tassimo system, though, is that it allows you to try all sorts of different flavors of coffee that you might otherwise never bother to brew in the traditional manner, since you would have to make an entire pot at one time.  Tassimo makes it easy for you to brew just one cup of whatever brand of coffee you are thinking about putting in your coffee drink holder.  If you don’t like it, you wasted less than a minute and will never have to have it again.

Among the many popular brands of coffee available in T disc form is Gevalia.  Gevalia is well known as a manufacturer of many different kinds food and beverages including specialty coffees featuring a whole host of interesting flavors.  They also offer a line of espresso, cappuccino, and lattes featuring an expensive restaurant taste, yet available at the push of a button in your own home – and at a fraction of the cost!  Tassimo latte discs are especially popular.

If you prefer tea to coffee, there is a growing asortment of Tassimo tea discs to satisfy your tastes.  The wide variety of tea offerings include Chai, Earl Grey, green tea, and many more, from manufacturers that include Tazo and Twinings, among many others.
