Cup Holder Luxury

Saturday, November 28th, 2009

Cup holders are a fairly standard convenience in almost every automobile made today. Though they are a relatively simple part of any automobile, they have become almost a necessity for any driver. Cup holders are such special things allowing you to enjoy your time in any car. They are made for people who enjoy driving and at the same time can’t imagine their lives without a sip of hot coffee or tea. Cup holders are very important.

Cup holders are found at either end of the instrument panel near the outboard vents, and sometimes feature a folding lower support and ratcheting arm that hold various cup shapes and sizes in place. While large enough for a Starbucks Venti Double Mocha Latte, the cup holder’s lower leg supports only one side of the cup; allowing it to tip precariously toward the driver’s or passenger’s leg. These cup holders are not at all convenient to use, being a waste in some cars. Cup holders themselves are actually important. Every meal is commonly accompanied by a beverage.

Cup holders are designed to stay out of sight until needed. Choose straight or wedge-shaped arms, easy to create your own customized beverage holding plan. Cup holders are but one trivial detail of course, and most Europeans don’t consider them necessary, but on the American front we love to have them. Cup holders are an American thing, most European car designers don’t bother.

Cup holders are also a safety device. Hot liquids carried on a wheelchair or scooter user’s lap is highly dangerous. Cup holders are a definite necessity on any beach or lounge chair (great for holding cold beverages). Another essential feature is that the chair be foldable. Not to mention the fact that cup holders are great while traveling on an airplane.

Cup holders for cars are available in many combinations of cup layouts, rim designs, depth dimensions and diameter sizes. One-piece units can come standard in a satin aluminum or other metal finishes. Our unit however comes in black plastic, including two Velcro straps and two foam pads. To release the cup holder, simply unlatch the Velcro straps, removing them from around the armrest. Then pull the cup holder off of the armrest.

Built-in cup holders began to be available in the 1980s. Minivans were pioneers in their availability, and they still offer the greatest number of them. Some earlier models involved trays that folded out of the dashboard. This was not a viable option for cars in motion. Through time and necessity the cup holder has become a staple in North American auto manufacturing and design.

Cup Holder Development

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

A cup holder is a modern device that is simple in idea and design. It is something that many of us use almost every day, if not daily, yet hardly ever consider. What would our lives be without this little development that holds our cups and other drinking vessels?

Our bodies require water to function and sustenance. Thus, drinking has become a part of our every day lives. It is strongly recommended that we drink eight to ten glasses of water per day. If you are striving to maintain your health and weight, this is a good practice, and will usually require carrying water with you at all times. Not only is drinking a necessity for life, but it has also become habit, such as morning coffee. Drinking certain beverages such as lattes or cappuccinos can also be the fashionable thing to do. So we drink to live, we drink out of habit, and we drink because it is the popular thing to do.

Perhaps James Guillow realized this when he invented the cup holder in’43. Sadly, the potential of his invention was not realized until many years later.

When drive-in and drive-through restaurants became popular in the’60′s, cup holders began to be sold. They were then in developmental form and were often just little wedges that clipped onto the car door window or would fit in the center console.

Later on built in cup holders became more common, especially when minivans came onto the scene. With time, automakers had to become more inventive with cup holders as commercial industries began selling soft drinks in varied cup and bottle sizes. This was a challenge that the auto industry has lived up to.

The major event that led up to the popularity of cup holders was a lawsuit filed against McDonalds when a seventy-year old woman had a cup of scalding hot coffee spilled on her lap. Although she merely asked for an apology and money to pay her doctor and cleaning fee, the company harshly refused, a decision that ended up costing them millions. After this incident, companies realized the hazard posed by hot drinks and the use of cup holders grew by leaps and bounds.

The use of cup holders in cars actually have more to do with safety than anything. With over six million auto accidents occurring each year in the United States, we should be doing everything possible to decrease this statistic. Doing anything while driving can be a distraction that could end up in a bad accident. Using a cup holder instead of trying to hold your cup and drive could keep you from having an accident.

Some important attributes of a cup holder include not only its size, design, and functionality, but also its location and placement. Cup holders need to be placed within reach, yet not in the way. This is especially true if you are driving a manual stick shift automobile.

Any parent with small children knows how invaluable a cup holder can be. Parents only have so many hands! Manufacturers have listened and realized this; as a result, nearly all baby strollers and car seats are equipped with this convenience.

Now cup holders are such a modern convenience that they would be greatly missed were they to suddenly start disappearing. For not only have we begun to use them for their primary purpose, but they have suddenly become coin holders, phone holders, and a good place to set any small items you need easy access to without the worry of them flying across the floor! So yes, cup holders have become a necessity for most Americans’ daily lives.

Short and Long term wheelchair users want the same thing – convenience.

The view that wheelchairs are restrictive is an example of ignorant and regressive thinking. This is because in some ways, wheelchairs can be liberating for those who would otherwise have been robbed of their ability to live their lives. Life is all about perspective and ‘how you take it’. You may not be able to always change your circumstances and the fact that you are in a wheelchair could be a given, based on a medical condition or health problems or perhaps some accident. But you can certainly change your response to the fact that you are in a wheelchair and look for ways and means to make your life more enjoyable, productive and a help to others too.

There are many ways in which people who are in wheelchairs can make their lives a little easier as well as more comfortable. There could also be some solutions that are not too expensive or extensive, and yet could go a long way in ensuring that one gets the advantage of modern technology and innovative inventions. Take for example the case of a cup holder for a power wheelchair, which is an innovation which bring about a great deal of convenience for people in wheelchairs.

Wheelchair users would like to have some comfort and convenience in handling cups and other kinds of containers that they use for consumption of beverages. Such people can easily sip some coffee, or a cold drink to break the monotony and quench their thirst. Sometimes they can also keep some snacks in the cup holder, if beverages are not what they exactly fancy. All of this can be done with the minimum of fuss and in a very tidy manner if proper cup holders are used.

Using drink holders is a cinch, if one were to make use of the latest Velcro fasteners which make it so easy to keep the cup holders in place properly. You do not have to keep fumbling with the cup holder.

Do look at the many cup holder websites to get details of the various kinds of wheelchair cup holders that are available. You will be quite surprised at the huge range that you get.
