Brief History of the Cup Holder.

Friday, September 25th, 2009

A cup holder in automobiles is not a new concept; in fact we have become so used to them in our cars that imagining a drive without them would leave a lot to desire. But this was not always the case. There was a time when they were considered just another non-essential accessory for mere decorative purposes.
The blame for this late surge in popularity lies primarily with inadequate suspension technology in cars and rather poor conditions of the roads. The bone jarring experience of driving in earlier days did not gel with the idea of a cola sipping long drive.

The necessity of cup holders first arose with the increase in popularity of drive-in restaurants and theatres. Initially they were mere temporary arrangements in form of trays hooked on to the side windows of cars. Then someone had the brainwave of modifying the lids of glove compartments so they can balance the beverage cups in the indentations provided in the lid. Although this solved the problem for parked vehicles, the dream of quenching the thirst with a cold soda on a hot desert road remained just that; a dream. These make shift arrangements prevented the sliding of cups but still in a moving car, liquid spilled frequently.

Even with improvements later on, the cup holders failed to satisfy both the aesthetic and utility requirements. They were generally attached to the inside of car doors. Apart from severely reducing the leg space, they were also vulnerable to occasional slamming of doors which without fail resulted in a messy floor mat of the car. Of course, with time and technology the design has also evolved. The present generation cup holders are generally equipped to hold securely cups of all sizes. A popular method to achieve this is to use spring loaded holders which clasp onto the cups irrespective of their size.
The development path of cup holders has not been constant world over. European cars were pretty late to catch on to the cup holder mania. The only reason is the stark difference of culture. Drive-ins, the prime catalyst for cup holder development never became that popular in Europe. Of course with today’s shrinking world and globalized markets which cater to international clientele such differences have been reduced in cars.

No one claims that the cup holders today are perfect specimens with no scope of improvement. I think to sum it up; we can safely bet our money on automobile giants to continuously strive to achieve that perfection.

Where Do Cup Holders Come From?

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

When we think of cup holders, the first thing that comes to mind is how utterly helpless we would be without them in our comfy automobiles. Heralded as another non-essential addition to the interior décor of cars at the time of its inception, today imagining a car without a cup holder is well neigh impossible.

To be fair to early automotive creators, addition of something like this could not have entered their mind. The suspension systems were crude by today’s standards and combined with the not-so-smooth road conditions, the thought of sipping a cola while driving was too far-fetched to be taken seriously.

The popularization of drive-in restaurants and theaters paved the way for the earliest cup holders. These were basically makeshift arrangements where servers would hook a tray over the car’s side window. Sometimes the inside of the glove compartment had serrations to precariously support the beverage cups. All these arrangements were good enough for a parked car but ineffective when the car was in motion. Even the grooved glove compartments that protected against sliding were useless against sloshing and spilling. Leaving a drive-in with an unfinished drink meant summoning your immense juggling talents while you changed gears with a cup balanced on your thigh or your other hand.

The initial cup holders were anything but seamless with the automobile’s interior design. They were devices attached to the inside of car doors which invited the obvious risk of occasional over enthused slamming of doors. Over time however, automotive cup holders have become more sophisticated and convenient with the capacity to hold securely cups of various sizes. A popular design is to employ spring-loaded holders that clasp the cup regardless of its size.

One interesting cultural difference is starkly evident when we compare the evolution of automobiles in Europe and America. While for a lot of Americans the design and location of cup holder features amongst the important parameters influencing vehicle purchase, in Europe, designers consider cup holders inessential for driving pleasure or safety. However, with increasing globalization and integration of world markets many cars in Europe do incorporate cup holders.

The development of cup holder design has been an ongoing process and there is still scope for improvement. More often than not the supremacy of a design is a subjective matter but we can safely say that creative think tanks of automobile giants would continue to churn surprises for the masses.

Have thanked your cup holder today?

Hi! I’m your cup holder. Welcome to my world. A world where I am useful to people from all walks of life and, serve the purpose of holding your drinks while you work. My life is anything but drab. I help people to avoid spilling their drinks. I make sure that important things like attending to writing, reading and working on your computer are made possible by my presence without you having to forego your morning drink.

For those of you who have trudged to your workplace after getting a drink, you may feel the need to have your drink while you open your mail. If I am there at your desk, you can do this without major effort while you drive away the morning blues with a cup of strong coffee.

And for those who have their coffee while driving, I am there by your side in the car to help you out. My advice is: don’t drink while you are driving. But, when “hands free” mobiles are the order of the day, why can’t hands free drinking be out of place. After all you have the luxury of having me in the car.

My day starts early and ends late at night. Sometimes, it extends throughout the night as well. Talk about round the clock service and 24/7 utility. You may drop your breakfast on to the desk or your seat. But, not coffee! Because, I am there to hold your cup so that you don’t spill your coffee.

You don’t have to invest a lot to get me to your service. Nor am I cheap. You’d probably get me for the price of two movie tickets. Isn’t that a good deal? Instead of taking your sweetheart to the movie, you can get to buy me. And what more than having me to do your bidding throughout my tenure.

Old soldiers don’t die. They fade away. It is the same with me. I get replaced with younger substitutes and am recycled to become something else. Sometimes, people hold on to me for old times’ sake.

Next time you see me somewhere, pat me on the back for all that I do to help you in your daily life. Don’t you think I deserve an occasional thank you? After all, I’m your friendly cup holder that is dispensable yet indispensable. Now, isn’t that something?
